Upload and display your own data in ensembl

What is data upload?

Ensembl's data upload facility lets you display your own data on Ensembl ContigView displays. You may then share this data source with others or keep the data source private to yourself.

Is my uploaded data stored permanently?

No! - we only have limited space for uploaded data. You will be emailed when your uploaded data is a month old. The email will contain instructions about how to preserve your data on our servers. If you do not respond to the email the data will be permanently deleted. Please make sure you submit a valid email address when uploading your data or we will not be able to contact you before deleting the data.

How can I make a persistant data source?

The data upload facility is only intended for small-scale or temporary data visualisation. If you need to establish a more permanent data facility, for example to share data within or between labs, please consider setting up your own DAS server. For more information, see the setting up your own secure DAS server document.

How do I upload data?

On any ContigView display select the "Upload data" item from the "DAS Sources" drop-down menu. This opens an upload window.

Enter your email address and a password you will use to administer the source later on. You can either paste in your data directly or browse to a local file on your computer (which may be compressed) and select this for uploading.

Please read the VERY IMPORTANT instructions on upload data format before attempting to upload any data

The data will be uploaded, assigned a unique ID and inserted into a database. It will also be attached automatically to your ContigView display. Use the standard DAS management functions to manipulate your displayed data.

If the data is uploaded successfully you will receive a confirmation page saying how much data was uploaded and displaying the unique data source ID. You should record this ID/password combination carefully because you will need it later to manage the data source.

Sharing uploaded data sources with others

To allow others to see the data source you have uploaded simply send them the data source ID. They may then use this ID to attach the data to their displays. Do not send them the password for the data source unless you want them to have permission to administer the source (ie delete it).

Re-attaching an uploaded data source

If you upload a data source and then remove it from the ContigView display using the "Manage sources" interface you may re-attach it to ContigView. Select the "Manage sources" item from the "DAS Sources" menu and enter the unique source ID. The data will reappear on ContigView. If the ID is incorrect or the data has been deleted you will see and error message. Go back and re-enter the correct ID to view your data.

Deleting an uploaded data source

When you no longer need an uploaded data source you may delete it from the Ensembl system by selecting the "Manage sources" item from the "DAS Sources" menu and enter the data source ID and password in the edit boxes under the "Delete Data" heading. If the source ID and password match those used when you set up the uploaded data, all trace of the data will be deleted from the system.

Is uploaded data held securely?

Although your data source is allocated a unique ID and any management operations on the data (eg deleting it) require a password, this is only trivial security. Data uploads are made on an "open" (non-secure) network connection. If your data is sensitive you should not upload it but contact Ensembl for more information.

While we undertake to not make uploaded data available to any person other than the originator we DO NOT provide any assurance whatsoever concerning data security and/or privacy.

If you are concerned about data privacy you should consider setting up your own secure DAS server.
